Freitag-Weinhardt served as the mechanical contractor for the Indiana State Museum. The museum is located within the White River State Park in Indianapolis, Indiana. This $56-million project included 130,000 square feet of museum space, 100,000 square feet for administrative offices and curatorial space, and 40,000 square feet for an IMAX theater. Total, the museum contains 270,000 square feet.
The mechanical HVAC system consists of a steam to water heat exchanger, 18 air handling units delivering 220,000 cfm, nine HVAC base mounted pumps, radiation heat system, individual unit heaters, and under floor radiation system. The plumbing package included six water heaters, a water softener system, and 225 plumbing fixtures.
The Freitag-Weinhardt mechanical package included temperature control, sheet metal, mechanical insulation, mechanical excavation, and testing and balancing of mechanical systems. This project peaked at over 50 craftsmen.
The project presented many logistical challanges due to restricted access and limited staging areas. These logistics were managed by a just-in-time material delivery process and deliveries scheduled during non-working hours.
